Governance Guardian, Employee Voice Champion, and Communicator roles

FREE01HR & Sustainability

Written by the People Study Pro CIPD content teamPublished Updated

This CIPD Level 0 video explores three critical roles within HR and sustainability through the FREE01 unit, specifically addressing assessment criteria AC 2.1. The video examines how people professionals function as governance guardians, ensuring compliance and ethical standards; as employee voice champions, amplifying workforce perspectives in sustainability initiatives; and as communicators, translating complex sustainability goals into organisational action. By understanding these interconnected roles, learners will develop the capability to explain how people professionals actively support and embed sustainability goals throughout their organisation.

What this video covers

Continuing the series on AC 2.1 of FREE01 – HR & Sustainability, this video covers three of the indicative people professional roles involved in supporting organisational sustainability goals: Governance and Compliance Guardian, Employee Voice Champion, and Communicator. The Governance Guardian discussion addresses how people professionals engage with legislation and reporting requirements such as modern slavery reporting, gender pay gap disclosure, and environmental health and safety standards, as well as the maintenance of policies, codes of conduct, and concern-reporting processes. The video also touches on monitoring workforce-related sustainability metrics, including employee wellbeing indicators, diversity statistics, and participation in environmental initiatives.

The Employee Voice Champion section examines how people professionals design and operate mechanisms that allow employees to contribute insights about sustainability challenges and opportunities. The video covers specific channel types — including employee forums, sustainability working groups, digital idea-sharing platforms, and team discussions — and addresses the critical question of how gathered perspectives are fed into decision-making and reported back to both leadership and staff. The distinction between passive information receipt and active employee participation in sustainability efforts runs through this part of the video.

The Communicator role rounds out the video with attention to audience segmentation, message framing, and the use of storytelling and recognition to build commitment to sustainability goals. The video covers two-way communication design — creating opportunities for dialogue, questions, and feedback rather than one-directional information distribution — and addresses the particular challenge of communicating difficult or disruptive sustainability-related changes, such as restrictions on business travel, with both clarity and sensitivity to employee concerns.
